Two One-Pagers made with MakeOnepagers: the Marketing Proposal in front of the Partnership Proposal

A marketing proposal template gives your pitch the order a decision-maker reads in: the goal, the plan, the timeline, the budget and the results to expect, ending with one next step. Fitting it on one page forces the hard choices before the client has to make them, and gives them something they can forward to whoever signs off. Below are the seven parts a client approves, a free template you can copy, and three examples.

What is a marketing proposal?

A marketing proposal is a document that asks someone to say yes to a marketing plan. An agency sends one to win a client. An in-house team sends one to win a budget. Either way, the reader is asking three questions: what will I get, what will it cost, and how will I know it worked?

A long proposal still has its place, for big contracts with legal terms. But the first thing a busy owner or manager reads should fit on one page. If they like that page, they will read the rest.

The 7 parts of a marketing proposal

  1. The goal, as a number from their business. "Grow weekday lunch sales 25% in 6 months", not "increase brand awareness".
  2. Where they are today. "Weekday lunch is 38% of sales and weekends carry the shop." It shows you understood the problem.
  3. The plan, in three or four parts. Each part named in two words, with one line on what it does.
  4. The timeline, by month or by week.
  5. The budget, part by part, with a total.
  6. The results to expect, as a chart or a number, month by month.
  7. One next step. A call, a meeting, a date to approve by.

If the client is cautious, add an eighth: the risks and how you will handle each one.

1. Agency proposal for a small business

A sample marketing proposal One-Pager made with MakeOnepagers: an agency's proposal for a bakery, the goal to grow weekday lunch sales 25% in 6 months, a four-part plan of local search, an email club, office catering and a review drive, a three-step timeline, a budget of $8,900 over 6 months, expected lunch sales by month and a call as the next stepEdit this template

An agency pitching a local bakery: one goal, four tactics, a small budget and the sales it should bring.

What to copy:

  • The goal in the owner's own numbers. The bakery owner knows their lunch sales. "25% more in 6 months" is something they can check at the till.
  • A budget a small business can picture: $600 a month here, $350 there, $1,200 once, and the six-month total.
  • Expected sales month by month, from $21K now to $26.3K in month six. It turns a cost into an investment.

2. In-house proposal for a campaign budget

A sample marketing project proposal One-Pager made with MakeOnepagers: a spring launch campaign for approval by 15 January, a budget of $155K over 12 weeks, 7,400 leads expected at $20.95 each, four parts from research to measurement, cost and duration by part, leads expected by month, potential risks on a grid and how each is handledEdit this template

A marketing team asking leadership to approve a 12-week launch: the ask in four numbers, then the proof.

What to copy:

  • "The Ask" as four numbers at the top: budget, duration, leads expected and cost per lead. Leadership can approve from the first row.
  • A date to approve by, in the subtitle. "For approval by 15 January" puts a deadline on the decision without sounding pushy.
  • Risks paired with how you will handle them. "Cap cost per lead at $28, then shift spend" shows the money is protected.

3. Campaign proposal for a local service business

A sample campaign proposal One-Pager made with MakeOnepagers: a spring open house campaign for a dental group, what the campaign does with a goal of 400 new patients by June, cost and timing for search ads, mailers, reminders and open house days totalling $22,000, risks with fixes, and expected new patients by monthEdit this template

A dental group's marketing team proposing a spring campaign, built around new patients rather than clicks.

What to copy:

  • Four aims, each with its own number: 400 new patients, online bookings up 30%, free checks on 4 Saturdays, 1,200 lapsed patients to win back.
  • Cost and timing in one table, so the owner sees when each dollar is spent.
  • A result the business already counts. Dentists count new patients, so the chart shows new patients.

How to write a marketing proposal in 6 steps

  1. Ask the client for one number they want to change, and by when.
  2. Write where they are today in one sentence, with their figure.
  3. Choose three or four tactics that move that number. Cut anything that does not.
  4. Price each one and add the total for the whole period.
  5. Estimate the result month by month. Be modest: a proposal that over-promises loses the second contract.
  6. End with one next step and a date.

Marketing proposal mistakes that cost the deal

  • A goal the client cannot measure. "Awareness" invites the question "how will I know?" Use sales, leads, bookings or patients.
  • Tactics with no price. If the reader has to email you to ask what something costs, the proposal stalls.
  • A total hidden at the bottom of page six. The budget is the first thing most owners look for. Show it.
  • No next step. End with a call, a meeting or a date to approve by.

Frequently asked questions

What should a marketing proposal include?

The client's goal as a number, where they are today, the plan in three or four parts, a timeline, a budget by part with a total, the results to expect and one next step. Add risks and how you will handle them for a cautious client.

How do I write a simple marketing proposal?

Start with the one number the client wants to change, list the three or four things you will do to change it, put a price and a month on each, show the result you expect, and ask for a short call. Keep it to one page.

Is there a free marketing proposal template in Word?

The templates on MakeOnepagers are free to edit online and download as a PDF you can attach to an email, free. If you need a Word file to type into, HubSpot offers a free Word and PDF template after a contact form.

What is the difference between a marketing proposal and a marketing plan?

A proposal asks someone to approve and pay for specific work. A marketing plan sets out everything a business will do over a period, usually a year, whether or not anyone outside needs to approve it.

How long should a marketing proposal be?

The part a decision-maker reads first should fit on one page. A full contract with terms, case studies and team bios can follow once they say yes in principle.
