Two One-Pagers made with MakeOnepagers: the Steering Committee Paper in front of the Executive Summary

How many words in a One-Pager? A well-made one has 100 to 200 words. We counted every word on our own designed One-Pager templates: the shortest held 88 words, the median held 134, and the longest held 308. That is a quarter or less of what a page of plain text holds, which is the point: a One-Pager is read in under a minute, not studied.

Below is the count broken down by kind of One-Pager, how the words are spread across a page, and how to cut yours down to size.

Word counts by kind of One-Pager

KindShortestMedianLongest
Business (reports, plans, pitches, profiles)88129192
School (book reports, biographies, concepts)128193211
Official forms (grant summaries, safety plans)206238308

Within business One-Pagers the kinds barely differ: project One-Pagers have a median of 119 words, strategy 134, sales and marketing 129, people and HR 138, and operations 131.

School One-Pagers run longer because they have to show understanding: a quote, its meaning, causes and effects. One-Pagers that follow an official form, like a grant's project summary or a safety plan, run longest because the form lists parts that must all be there.

Where the words go

Our One-Pagers have 3 to 7 sections, usually 5, with a median of about 25 words a section. That is two short sentences, or four bullet points, or a row of four numbers with their labels.

A sample executive summary One-Pager made with MakeOnepagers: Q3 performance for the CEO, Q3 revenue of $9.4M against $8.2M in Q2, revenue up 15%, margin 31%, churn 1.2% and NPS 52, what went well and what to watch, and three numbered recommendationsEdit this template

The shortest of ours, about 90 words. Six numbers and three recommendations carry the whole quarter.

A sample biography One-Pager made with MakeOnepagers: Marie Curie from 1867 to 1934, her life in four numbers, five turning points from 1891 to 1914, a quote from her 1911 Nobel lecture, three things she changed and her biggest decisionEdit this template

A school One-Pager at about 200 words: four numbers, five dated turning points, one quote and one big idea.

A number with a three-word label does more work than a sentence. "Churn 1.2%, 2-year low" is five words and says what a paragraph would. That is why the business One-Pagers stay so short.

How a One-Pager compares to a page of text

The page figures come from our own measurement in how many words fit on one page. At the average reading speed of 238 words a minute, our median One-Pager takes 34 seconds to read; the timing is in how long it takes to read one page.

How to cut yours to 150 words

  1. Write the one sentence the reader must remember. Make it the title or the first line.
  2. Turn every number into a figure with a label. "Revenue grew 15% compared with last quarter" becomes "+15%, quarter on quarter".
  3. Give each section one job, and cap it at about 25 words.
  4. Cut words that repeat the heading. Under "Risks", don't start with "The main risks are".
  5. Move the detail out. Link to the full report, or put it in an appendix. A One-Pager points to detail; it doesn't hold it.
A sample strategy on a page One-Pager made with MakeOnepagers: Fernhill Health's 2027 plan, from vision to three bets and six goals, what to start and stop, four numbers, three values and two goals with progress barsEdit this template

A year's plan in about 160 words: a vision, 3 bets, 6 goals, do and don't, and two goals tracked with bars.

How many words is a one-page summary?

A plain-text one-page summary can run to 600 words or more. Designed as a One-Pager with headings and numbers, it should be 100 to 200 words.

There is no set number, but at about 25 words a section and 5 sections, a One-Pager holds the equivalent of 10 to 15 short sentences, much of it written as bullet points and labeled numbers.
