Two One-Pagers made with MakeOnepagers: the Biography in front of the One-Page Newsletter

How long does it take to read one page? It takes the average adult about 2.5 to 3 minutes to read one single-spaced page of 12 pt text silently, and about 1.5 minutes for a double-spaced page. Reading the same page out loud takes about 3.3 to 4 minutes single spaced and 2 minutes double spaced. A designed One-Pager, with headings, numbers and short lines, is read in under a minute and a half, often under 40 seconds.

Those times come from two measurements put together: how many words a page actually holds, which we counted ourselves, and how fast adults actually read, from the largest published review of reading speed.

How fast do adults really read?

The average adult reads non-fiction silently at 238 words per minute, fiction at 260, and out loud at 183. That comes from a 2019 review of 190 studies and 18,573 readers by Marc Brysbaert, published in the Journal of Memory and Language. Most adults read non-fiction at 175 to 300 words per minute, so a fast reader gets through a single-spaced page in about 2 minutes and a slow one in about 4.

The review also found that the figure you often see, 300 words per minute or more, is too high. If you plan a talk or a reading assignment on 300, you will run short of time.

Why a One-Pager reads in under a minute

We counted the words on our own designed One-Pager templates. The shortest held 88 words, the median 134 and the densest 308. At 238 words per minute, that is 22 seconds, 34 seconds and 78 seconds.

A sample executive summary One-Pager made with MakeOnepagers: Q3 performance for the CEO, Q3 revenue of $9.4M against $8.2M in Q2, revenue up 15%, margin 31%, churn 1.2% and NPS 52, what went well and what to watch, and three numbered recommendationsEdit this template

About 90 words: a 22 second read. A CEO gets the quarter before the meeting starts.

A sample project charter One-Pager made with MakeOnepagers: Customer Portal v2, why the project exists, what is in and out of scope, three goals (support calls down 33%, launch in 90 days, a $410k budget), a who-does-what grid and four key dates from September 2 to the December 1 launchEdit this template

About 100 words: under 30 seconds to know the goal, the budget, the owners and the dates.

A sample biography One-Pager made with MakeOnepagers: Marie Curie from 1867 to 1934, her life in four numbers, five turning points from 1891 to 1914, a quote from her 1911 Nobel lecture, three things she changed and her biggest decisionEdit this template

About 200 words, near the top of the range: still under a minute.

Readers also skim. The big numbers, headings and timelines get read first, and many readers stop there. That is what a One-Pager is for: the point lands in the first few seconds even if nobody reads every word.

How to estimate your own reading time

  1. Count the words. Word and Google Docs both show a word count.
  2. Divide by 238 for silent reading of non-fiction, or by 183 if it will be read out loud.
  3. Add time for numbers and charts. A table or chart takes longer per word than prose.
  4. Plan for the slow reader. Divide by 175 if everyone must finish, for example in a meeting or an exam.

For a 10 minute talk read out loud, that is about 1,830 words: roughly 5 double-spaced pages or 2.5 single-spaced ones.
