The Pythagorean Theorem
Geometry · A math concept on one page
For any right triangle
If one angle is 90°, then a² + b² = c²
Square the two short sides and add them. That equals the square of the longest side, c, the one across from the right angle.
Worked Example: How Long Is the Ladder?
1
Read it
Foot 3 m from the wall, top 4 m up
2
Square
3² = 9 and 4² = 16
3
Add
9 + 16 = 25
4
Root
So c = √25 = 5 m
The Most Common Mistake
Do
Make c the longest side, across from the right angle
Square each side first, then add
Check: c must be longer than a and b
Don't
Add the sides, then square (3 + 4 = 7, 7² = 49)
Use it on a triangle with no right angle
Forget the square root at the end
Triples to Remember
9 + 16 = 25
3-4-5
25 + 144 = 169
5-12-13
64 + 225 = 289
8-15-17
