Habakkuk: The Weight of Waiting

Trinity Road Church · Sunday 8 February · Morning service

The Big Idea

Habakkuk does not begin with an answer. It begins with a complaint, and God does not rebuke him for making it.

The book moves from “how long” to “yet I will rejoice” without the circumstances changing once. Nothing gets better between chapter one and chapter three.

What changes is where the prophet is standing when he looks at it.

Three Movements

The complaint (1:1 to 1:4)

Violence, and no answer. The prophet is not asking a theoretical question. He is asking why the people who do this keep winning, and he asks it out loud.

The answer that makes it worse (1:5 to 2:1)

God replies, and the reply is harder than the silence: the Babylonians are coming. Habakkuk does not accept it quietly. He climbs the watchtower and waits for a second answer.

The song (3:17 to 3:19)

No fig tree, no fruit on the vine, no herd in the stall. Then: yet I will rejoice. The list of what is missing comes first, and it is not softened.

Lines to Sit With

How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen?

Habakkuk 1:2 The first question

Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, yet I will rejoice.

Habakkuk 3:17 to 18 The last word
