Small Group Guide: Luke 15
The three lost things · One evening · For the person leading it
The Evening, In Order
01
Arrive and eat (20 min)
Do not shorten this. The people who talk least in the discussion are the ones who were still taking their coat off when it started.
02
Read all three parables aloud (10 min)
Three readers, one each. Hearing them back to back is the whole point, and most people have only ever heard the third.
03
The question below (25 min)
One question, and let the silence do its work. Resist filling it.
04
The older brother (20 min)
The parable does not end with the party. It ends outside, with a son who will not come in and a father who goes out to him twice.
05
Pray in twos (10 min)
Twos, not the whole room. Nobody prays honestly in front of eleven people.
The One Question
Which of the three lost things did you assume you were?
Follow-up, only if it stalls: which one would the person beside you say you are?
If the Room Goes Quiet
The sheep wanders off, the coin cannot move at all, and the son leaves on purpose. Which is nearest to how you got here?
Prompt Use once, not twice
Leading It Well
Do
Let a silence run to ten seconds
Ask the quietest person a direct, easy question early
Say plainly when you do not know
Finish on time, even mid-sentence
Don't
Answer your own question
Let one person carry the room
Turn the older brother into a villain
Add a fourth application because it went well
All three stories end in a party, and only the last one shows somebody refusing to go. That refusal is the part Jesus leaves unresolved, so leave it unresolved too.
